Use a distortion or saturation effect you already have. Stop when the bass notes become easier to follow.
Don’t let louder fool you.
Switch the effect off and on. If it got louder, turn its output down before you compare.
Check the phone. Then the headphones.
Can you follow the bass line on both? If it gets fizzy, back the effect off.
Keep it if: The notes come through on your phone and the bass still feels good in headphones.
Shorten the bass.

Lower your sampler’s Release a little. That controls how long the sound hangs around after the note ends.
Keep it if: The kick feels clearer and the bass still has the groove you liked.
Lower the melody.
Find the bass again.
Turn the melody down a little. A loud pad or melody can hide your bass. Play the whole beat and lower that part until you can hear both.

Mute the melody.
Bass suddenly clear? You found what was hiding it.

Bring it back, a little quieter.
Stop where the melody and bass both feel good.
Keep it if: You can follow the bass without the melody feeling too quiet.
